No, I am not searching for any Mildred or Louise to consume bugs and lay eggs within my garden. However I couldn’t resist purchasing a ticket to Austin’s fifth annual Funky Chicken House Tour after watching a current Central Texas Gardener episode (below) about Dani and Gary Moss’s charming and playful garden in southwest Austin.
Found on Westview Road, your garden is really a homegrown creation through the upon the market but hard-working proprietors, who clearly can make what you set their brains to. Dani envisions projects similar to their unique Chicksville chicken house, and Gary builds them. Also, he welds metal into flowery stair railings, arbors…
…and decorative accents placed through the garden, such as this metal heart inscribed with Dani’s nickname. How adorable is the fact that?
Their chicken house is sturdily built of wood and wire, having a metal roof for shelter from the weather. A ramp leads up via a hen-sized entrance within the stone foundation…
…into the colorful chicken house itself, that also offers space for storage for food along with other supplies. It appears a lot more like a lucky little girl’s playhouse than the usual chicken house, doesn’t it? A small chandelier even hangs in the porch ceiling.
Similarly, the British-style green house that Gary designed for Dani is outfitted up inside with two chandeliers.
Within the garden, roses were in bloom—lots of red Knock Outs along with a climbing pink rose which flaming orange-and-yellow beauty.
Gary’s metal flowers provide nonstop blooms across the fence.
Along with a container tree occur an outdoor bed near another of Gary’s heart creations.
What don’t they’ve? There is even this metal giraffe, cheekily putting on Carnival beads…
…and a banded armadillo made from scrap metal.
Everywhere you looked, there have been a lot of couple’s creations, in addition to lush plantings of evergreens and flowering perennials.
I’m glad I’d an opportunity to view it, together with both of these docents putting on amusing chicken hats.
Happy Easter time and happy spring!
